Course Descriptions

TECT ENTRANCE

15km & 30km

The clockwise loop starts underneath the overpass where Pyes Pa Road crosses Weld Road at the centre of the Park.

Travel up Weld Road (gravel) heading in a westerly direction and turn right just before the t-intersection with Te Ara o Raho Road – where the Adrenaline Forest high ropes course is. Weave up towards the Adrenaline Forest car park.

After the Adrenaline Forest car park, veer right onto the MTB track (Raho's Rollercoaster) that runs parallel to the road. 300m along this track cut down left and straight across Te Ara o Raho Road to join the Gully Track.

The Gully Track weaves through an area of cleared forest before dipping down into the TBC Trail and up out of the gully to another clearing. A couple of switchbacks leads up to a 4WD track that branches left and right – take the left-hand track at this point.

"School Camp"2

The 4WD track heads to the School Camp site (an area of thinned trees) on the northern side of Ngawaro Road. There will be a drink station at this point. Cross Ngawaro Road to the single track that runs parallel to the road, following it until it pops out onto Ngawaro Road after just over 500m. Just around the corner, on the right, is a set of bollards in the ground that mark the entrance to the Buffalo Girl MTB Track – take this track.

StreamCrossing

When that track emerges from the bush (some up/down, 3 stream crossings, about 2km long), stay with the hill on your left and carry on up, this 4WD track meets a gravel road after 500m, keep going up to the Lookout (radio tower).

Go past the the Lookout and there is a track heading down to the right from the top, weaving down to the gravel road.

"Lookout Drop"

When the track meets the gravel road, stay on this as it heads to the right (don’t take the left fork). This road then goes down into a gully and the New Bridge and up the other side.

At the top of the road there is a clearing (the MTB Hub) and a toilet 100m away on your left. There will be a drink station at this point. Don't head towards the toilet, instead turn right onto Buffalo Girl, past the Lost Tank and towards the Model Aircraft Club. Don't ake the left at the Model Aircraft Club, instead carry on straight ahead on Buffalo Girl (this is a change from 2013).

When you get back to the TBC Trail turn left and backtrack the path you took in the first few kilometres until you come out onto Te Ara o Raho Road. Cross the road and turn left onto Raho's Rollercoaster. Where it joins the Te Ara o Raho Road again there is a steep-ish 4WD track heading down to the right – take this down to the Camp.

At the bottom, where the BBQ table and fire pit area is, turn left and follow the Te Rerenga Track.

"Te Rerenga Tunnel"

The Te Rerenga Track continues along a series of well-formed tracks and board walks through the tunnel (walk on the left side close to the wall to avoid the potholes). After the tunnel there is a steep section of steps, climbing up out of the stream-bed. This track takes you up from the tunnel, back towards the Arrival Centre. Just after the pond there is a branch left which does a short loop out and around a gully before returning to the basin below the Arrival Centre where the finish line is located.

One lap is 15km, for the 30km event branch right at the pond just before the Arrival Centre which leads to the overpass and the start of lap two.

There will be a drink station at this point for the 30km participants.

There is approximately 350m of vertical ascending in each 15km loop and trail-running/off-road shoes are recommended.

Note: The 30km distance is for runners only and the organisers reserve the right to remove participants at their discretion from the course after one lap.

5km & 10km

Start

The clockwise loop starts underneath the overpass where Pyes Pa Road crosses Weld Road at the centre of the Park.

Travel up Weld Road (gravel) heading in a westerly direction and turn right just before the t-intersection with Te Ara o Raho Road – where the Adrenaline Forest high ropes course is. Weave up towards the Adrenaline Forest car park.

After the Adrenaline Forest car park, veer right onto the MTB track (Raho's Rollercoaster) that runs parallel to Te Ara o Raho Road. 300m along this track don't turn left (15km/30km participants only) instead continue on this track until in comes out at a clearing after 1km that meets back with Te Ara o Raho Road. Turn hard-right onto a steep-ish 4WD track that leads down to the Camp.

At the bottom, where the BBQ table and fire pit area is, turn left and follow the Te Rerenga Track.

"Te Rerenga Track" boardwalk

The Te Rerenga Track continues along a series of well-formed tracks and board walks through the tunnel (walk on the left side close to the wall to avoid the potholes). After the tunnel there is a steep section of steps, climbing up out of the stream-bed. This track takes you up from the tunnel, back towards the Arrival Centre. Just after the pond there is a branch left which does a short loop out and around a gully before returning to the basin below the Arrival Centre where the finish line is located.

"Finish"

One lap is 5km, for the 10km event branch right at the pond just before the Arrivals Centre which leads to the overpass and the start of lap two.

There will be a drink station at this point for the 10km participants.

Running/walking shoes are suitable for these loops. Pushchairs and buggies are not recommended due to the large number of steps to negotiate after the tunnel.

Note: Dogs are not permitted in the 5km event due to the number of children participating.

Map of Course

The descriptions above are to be read in conjunction with the PDF map of the two courses.

Please note that the map for both the long course (15km/30km) and the short course (5km/10km) is slightly different to the Course Descriptions. The descriptions are accurate and to be followed.

The long course no longer heads out along the Equestrian Link to the to the Equestrian area, but takes a right turn at the Mountain Bike hub and then the second right onto Buffalo Girl and runs back through the TBC Trail (marked as The Gully) in the opposite direction out onto Te Ara o Raho Road and along Rahos Rollercoaster. It then cuts down to the Camp and joins the short course route to the finish.

The short course continues all the way up to the Adrenalin Forest from the start area before following Rahos Rollercoaster to the first track on the right, turning down to the Camp, then continuing on the Te Rerenga trail.
